Grid Connect is an industrial networking and IoT (Internet of Things) solutions partner based in Naperville, IL. For more than 20 years, we have helped engineers and manufacturers build, ship, and support connected products — from CAN adapters and Ethernet switches stocked on our shelves to fully custom IoT solutions designed from a blank page. This post is a quick look at who we are, what we do today, and where we are headed.
From a distributor in 2002 to a connected-solutions partner today
Grid Connect started in 2002 as a small distribution company. The idea was simple: give engineers fast access to the best industrial networking products available. To do that, we built trusted relationships with global manufacturers and earned a reputation for reliable delivery, real technical expertise, and people who answered the phone.
For more than 20 years, we have done that work — adding inventory, expanding our engineering team, and standing behind every product we ship. We are ISO 9001:2015 certified, and our quality processes hold across distribution, manufacturing, and custom development alike.
Where Grid Connect stands today
Today, Grid Connect operates in three connected areas, all serving the same kind of customer: engineers and manufacturers building connected systems.
Distribution. We stock 350+ industrial networking components from vetted global manufacturers — CAN, Ethernet, Wireless, Serial, PROFIBUS, IP intercoms, and more. Engineers buy from us when they need the right part, in stock, shipped quickly. Same-day or next-day shipping is the rule, not the exception, and our team is staffed by people who understand how the product fits into the larger system.
GRID Products. We design and assemble our own industrial-grade networking hardware in Naperville, IL. The line covers EtherNET/IP, PROFINET, OPC-UA, Modbus, MQTT, and BACnet — the protocols engineers actually use on factory floors, in vehicles, and across infrastructure. Every unit is 100% tested in Naperville before it leaves us.
Custom Services. When off-the-shelf parts cannot solve the problem, our engineering team takes the project end-to-end: hardware design, firmware, software, cloud integration. Proof-of-concept in 12 weeks. Market-ready product in under 12 months. The work that used to take 3+ years inside a single company gets done with us in a fraction of the time, and customers keep the IP — we do not lock them into ours.
How we work: when you call, you talk to a person
One thing that defines how Grid Connect works: when you call us during business hours, you talk to a person, not a menu. Our team handles order status, technical questions, sales conversations, and engineering decisions directly. If your call needs to reach an engineer, it reaches an engineer.
That habit shapes the way we work on bigger projects too. We do not see ourselves as a vendor sitting on the other side of a quote. We work alongside your team, treat your challenge as ours, and your timelines as ours.
The industries that rely on us
Our products and IoT solutions sit inside systems that have to keep running. That means we work with companies where downtime is not an option:
-
Aerospace and defense: rugged networking and monitoring for mission-critical, high-reliability systems
-
Automotive and EV: networking and IoT for vehicles, charging systems, and emerging electric platforms
-
Data centers: remote monitoring and networking for uptime-critical infrastructure
-
Healthcare: secure and reliable solutions for medical equipment and facility systems
-
Heavy machinery, industrial automation, smart infrastructure, and transportation: wherever connected components need to perform on day one and still perform on day 3,000
Companies rely on Grid Connect to keep their connected products moving. Some buy a single part. Others bring us a napkin sketch. The work scales to fit the project.
Where Grid Connect is going
Grid Connect is evolving. The next few years will look different from the last 20, but the direction is in service of the same goal: helping engineers and manufacturers ship connected products that work. Here is what that looks like for customers.
A product mix built around the problem, not the catalog. We are sharpening our focus on the verticals and protocols we know best, and building more Grid Connect products that fill the gaps off-the-shelf hardware misses. Distribution still anchors what we do, with 350+ components from manufacturers we trust. What is new is the depth of choice when distribution alone is not enough: a customizable core of Grid Connect products that adapt to your system, alongside a custom services team ready to design something purpose-built when the project calls for it. The shape of the company is moving from a catalog you order from toward a partner you build with.
Speed you can plan around. Our delivery model is built on speed paired with reliability. That means high-quality, compliant, ready-to-scale hardware on tight timelines — and the kind of consistency that lets your team plan around our schedule. Whether you are working with us on a design problem, ordering a part, or calling us after the sale, the experience should feel like the same company every time.
A team focused on listening, responding, and delivering. We are not trying to be the flashiest name in industrial networking, and we are not trying to be the biggest. The Grid Connect team takes pride in being the best at three things: listening to what you actually need, responding faster than you expect, and delivering on what we promise. That is what our customers tell us they value most, and it is what we plan to keep getting better at.
Easy to work with, hard to compete with. That is how we want every customer and partner to describe Grid Connect five years from now. Our partnerships — with the manufacturers we distribute, with companies we integrate alongside, and most of all with the engineering teams who build with us — are built on responsiveness, engineering creativity, and a long-running commitment to your success. Many of our customers have been with us for decades. We intend to keep it that way.
Why this blog exists
Our goal for this blog is to have an ongoing conversation with you, our customers. We share what we know about the industry, the products, the protocols, and the projects we work on. Your comments, your questions, and your requests for future topics are always welcome.
We are proud of where we are, but more excited by where we are going. Thanks for reading — and for following along as we keep building.
